28th Georgia Volunteer Infantry

1861 - 1865

This site is respectfully dedicated to the men of the 28th Georgia Volunteer Infantry who left their homes in 1861 to answer the call of duty to defend their country and become part of "the greatest army the world has ever known" - a journey which would take them from the farm lands of North Georgia to the battlefields of Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Florida - and from which many would never return.

Let us never forget.

Background Music

"The Bonnie Blue Flag"

Words by Harry McCarthy
Music from the traditional Irish air "The Irish Jaunting Car"

The song was written in early 1861 by Harry McCarthy, an English-born vaudevillian and composer, who began introducing it in his programs in Mississippi. It became an instant success when he performed it for a soldier audience in New Orleans later that year. The song soon spread in popularity and became the second most popular song in the Confederacy.
